Article for The Annealer Magazine, Summer 2007, Issue 2

Well folks, much to my surprise the article I've written for The Annealer Magazine has been published. For those of you who are not familiar with this magazine, it is U.S. based, and caters for lampworkers (glass bead artist). I got a surprise to receive two copies of the magazine in my postal box.

Anyway, it's been heavily edited from the original piece I've written but that's life I guess. *big sigh*

The article is about the glass revolution in Australia and New Zealand. It briefly describes what's going on here in downunder about this craft, as well as the establishment of the AGBG Australian Glass Beadmakers Guild and the SRA/ANZ Self-Representing Artist Australia and New Zealand.

It's my first time to be published in a magazine and for a great cause because it raises community awareness about AGBG AND SRA/ANZ.

My warmest thanks to Barbara Robinson, the founder of the AGBG for helping me write the article.

SWEET MOJO

Last night, 25 May 2007, I saw SWEET MOJO, an awesome acoustic band, at Corrigidor (Rooty Hill) with my husband Anthony and my bestfriend Alma and her husband Leo.

We all listened to SWEET MOJO's fine music both in English and Tagalog and were entertained with the variety of songs offered considering they had to change their selection at a drop of a hat for the second half of the show.

Although a tough crowd, SWEET MOJO was able to get some people on the dance floor, this includes Alma and Leo. Plus, they got the crowd singing to "BONGGA KA DAY", even my husband Anthony (who can't speak Tagalog) got into the groove and joined us.

So you guys, don't miss out, you can see this band for yourself next week at Corrigidor. Here's their website for details. http://sweetmojo.multiply.com/

See you all there!

P.S. Pictures coming soon, it's too early for hubby this morning, he is still in bed

What Now? 26 May, 2007 SUNDAY

I believe that things happen for a reason. Recently, I've made a huge step and resigned from my job as a registered nurse. My last day at work will be on Wednesday, 30 May, 2007.

After working in the community for 4 years and 8 months, and in the hospital system for 8 years and 2 months, it's time to move on.

I'll take a month break to holistically rejuvinate, set up my art studio, fine-tune my lampworking or glassbeadmaking skills on a regular basis, continue learning digital photography with my hubby Anthony, spend more time with my family and friends and take a vacation/holidays in the Phillipines (16-30 June, 2007).

I'm a lil bit sad yet I'm so excited of what tomorrow will bring. One thing for sure, I'm ready for the new challenges that life has to offer.

I got hope, faith, love and most importantly with J.C. on my side what more can I ask for?

DVD Tutorial "PERAZA:The Sculpted Rose"

ATTENTION: to all advanced beginners, intermediate hot glass artists/lampworkers

If you use a HOTHEAD torch and wonder if it's suitable to sculpt roses.... Don't despair. The Peraza technique is HOTHEAD torch friendly. I know this for a fact. Because I used my HOTHEAD torch to sculpt my very first rose. I'm amazed at the ease in sculpting roses using the Peraza technique. I made a perfect rose the first go. It's really quite addictive. Once you start, you can't stop!

Marilyn used a minor burner torch in her DVD but I followed her technique as presented on the DVD just using my hothead torch and no worries. The Peraza technique is so easy to follow and I'm able to sculpt roses the first go with awesome results and just by using my HOTHEAD torch.

I recommend you use ITALIAN glass when sculpting as it's easier to manipulate.

If you are in Australia, See chockadoo for supplies. Cathy sells this DVD there and has a whole range of ITALIAN glass at competitive pric...

Rifie is SRA member # H74

We are a group of glass artists who are dedicated to the art of lampworking. It's an ancient art form that flourished in Italy in the 1300s and then spread throughout Europe, the Americas and the rest of the world.

We work at home in our own studios, making beads, marbles or other glass objects one at a time. Patiently and carefully we strive for perfection in every object that we make. We are from the USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the UK, Israel, Germany... all over the world!

As self-representing artists, one of our greatest challenges is finding ways to bring our art before the people who want to own it, and educating those buyers about the uniqueness and quality of our work. We hope that this directory will help you to discover us and learn a little a bit more about our process, our studios, and our personalities; and, of course, our art!

Rifie's Testimony on DVD 'Peraza: The Sculpted Rose'

I bought a copy of Marilyn Peraza's dvd at Chockadoo on Tuesday 17 April, 2007. I watched it once when I got home and I made my very first set of dark red roses with rosebuds. I was ecstatic with the results so I e-mailed her the next day via the Bead Artist website. Alas, she replied to me straight away and asked if she could use my testimony on her website. I'm so honoured.

I highly recommended Marilyn's dvd because despite of me having basic equipment, I was able to make a set of perfect roses just in time for Mothers' day. Marilyn U R a great teacher. Keep up the excellent work!

Sunday, 22 April 2007. Glass Enthusiast's Monthly Meeting at Chockadoo, AUSTRALIA

I took my bestfriend Alma to the meeting today. (Please refer to the Photo Album). We were the first ones to get there, the gates were still closed LOL!!! Talking about excited. Anyway, I got my mobile phone with me and called Telstra Information Service for Chockadoo's number. Cathy answered but before she could come to our rescue, there's another business owner at the complex who arrived and kindly opened the gates for us.

More about Alma (mia)... I, too, work with Alma and she originally comes from the Phillipines... so see the similarities? We actually took classes together for fashion jewellery making back in July 2005. However, I'm the only one who took up lampworking.

Thus, It is my quest to recruit Alma and awaken her 'passion for the flame'. Soooooo, did it work? Let's just say I only just begun hahahahahahahahaha (evil laugh).
